SAN JOSE SPORTS HALL OF FAME CLASS OF 2001
Football Star
Plaque Location: SAP Center, Section 107
The Stanford University tailback is known as one of Santa Clara County’s greatest athletes of all time. His college football career culminated at the 1925 Rose Bowl where, on two broken ankles, he played all 60 minutes and rushed for 114 yards against the Four Horsemen of Notre Dame. In 1927, he became the only man ever to play professional football, basketball and baseball in the same year, and in 1929, he scored 40 points in a single game for the NFL’s Chicago Cardinals.
A man of determination and unparalleled talent, Nevers was inducted in memoriam into the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.
