During a career that spanned over 35 years, this innovative coach and administrator helped elevate Bay Area track and field to international acclaim. Following two national track titles at San Jose State, Bert led San Jose City College to state championships in 1975-76 while establishing a number of national collegiate records. He attracted world-class athletes to San Jose, both to train and to compete in the annual Bruce Jenner Classic, which continued for over two decades. A mentor to numerous Olympic champions, he was instrumental in bringing the 1984 and 1987 USA Track and Field Championships to San Jose.
Bert was inducted into the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame in 2007.
