What is the mission of San Jose Sports Authority?

The San Jose Sports Authority is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to increase the City of San Jose’s economic development, visibility and civic pride through sports. Serving as the City’s sports commission since its inception in 1991, the Sports Authority has provided leadership and support to attract or host hundreds of sporting events in San Jose and the South Bay. The Sports Authority also supports and operates community, youth and amateur sports programs, including the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame, and the REACH Youth Scholarship Program.

What type of events do you host?

The Sports Authority has a long and proud history of attracting and hosting sports here in the Capital of Silicon Valley, and as a result San Jose has established itself as a premier destination for some of the most prestigious amateur and professional sports events.

 

These include the College Football Playoff National Championship, U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Team Trials, U.S. Figure Skating Championships, National Hockey League All-Star Game, NCAA Men’s Basketball Championships, Wrestlemania, USA Fencing Junior Olympics, Amgen Tour of California, as well as sold-out international events such as USA vs. Ireland Rugby, USA vs. China FIVB World League Volleyball, and Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships.

What is the Sports Hall of Fame?

The San Jose Sports Hall of Fame honors those who have made extraordinary contributions in the sports world. Each inductee has developed his or her skills in Santa Clara County; played or coached for a county team or school; represented county as an individual athlete; or contributed in some extraordinary way to greater San Jose community in a sports-related program or project.Each fall, new inductees are honored in a gala ceremony at SAP Center at San Jose. What is the REACH Youth Scholarship?

The REACH Youth Scholarship Program has provided college funds to high school students over the past 20 years who have overcome adversity to excel in academics and sports. Each year, Santa Clara County high school seniors are nominated for the program, which stands for Recognizing Excellence, Adversity, Courage and Hard Work.

Only Santa Clara County high schools may nominate students for the award, with a maximum of five nominees per school. Nominees must then complete an essay and student information form.

Each Spring, all nominated students are recognized and the scholarship winners are announced at a breakfast ceremony, led by REACH Co-Charis Ronnie Lott and Brandi Chastain.

Where is the San Jose Sports Authority office located?

The San Jose Sports Authority office in the San Jose McEnery Convention Center. Our office is located on the Almaden Boulevard side of the convention center directly across from the San Jose Hilton. Parking is available in the convention center parking garage.
