Plaque Location: SAP Center, Section 109

Bill Walsh’s name has come to define coaching excellence. His ability to turn programs around and build championship teams is legendary. Bill began his football career, in 1956 as a graduate assistant for San Jose State University, where he had played both offensive and defensive end. In 1957, Bill took the head coaching job at Fremont’s Washington Union High School; his second year, he turned a 1-26 team into a 9-1 conference champ. Bill moved on to the role of defensive/offensive coordinator for some of most successful coaches in the game, including Paul Brown and Marv Levy. In 1977, Stanford offered Bill his first major head coaching opportunity.  After two winning seasons and a bowl victory with the Cardinal, was named head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. During the next ten years, he led the 49ers to six division titles, seven playoff appearances and three Super Bowl victories. The “NFL Coach of the Decade” returned to the college ranks for a second term as Stanford’s head coach in 1992.  That year, Bill led the Cardinal to its first 10-win season since 1940 and its highest national ranking – ninth —since 1970. In 1993, Walsh was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
