Legendary College Football Coach, NFL Champion
Plaque Location: SAP Center, Section 109
Buck Shaw is one of the most successful and beloved coaches in the history of football. He first showed his talent for the game as a star tackle at Notre Dame from 1919-1921. Led by coaching great Knute Rockne, Buck and teammates lost just one game in three years. In 1929, Buck came to California to join the Santa Clara University football coaching staff. Named head coach in 1936, Buck lead the Broncos to a 47-10-4 record over the next seven seasons. His remarkable success included a 16-game winning streak, a 1937 defense that allowed its opponents only nine points in nine games, and consecutive Sugar Bowl victories in 1936 and 1937. In 1946, after serving as a physical fitness instructor for the U.S. Army during World War II, Buck became the first head coach for the newly formed San Francisco 49ers. Buck coached the team from 1946-1954, during which time the 49ers made the transition from the All-American Conference to the NFL. In 1961, Buck won the NFL title as head coach for the Philadelphia Eagles. In 1972, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Buck passed away in 1977.
