Plaque Location: SAP Center, Section 109
Debi Thomas made her mark on the sports world when she won the bronze medal at the 1988 Olympics to become the first black athlete to medal in the Winter Games. This history-making performance was just one of many outstanding moments in her skating career. In 1986, while completing her freshman year at Stanford University, Debi won the U.S. and World Figure Skating Championship titles and was named the country’s top female amateur athlete of the year. In 1988, Debi earned a second U.S. Figure Skating title. After the Olympics, she turned pro and won the World Professional Figure Skating Championship in 1988, 1989 and 1991. Debi’s pursuit of excellence extends well beyond the ice rink. After graduating from Stanford with a degree in engineering, Debi earned her M.D. from Northwestern University.
