A Bay Area soccer icon, John Doyle starred in the sport at every level from high school through playing on the U.S. National Team.

Doyle was a second-team All-American at the University of San Francisco. He played professionally with American and European club teams, including the German first division club FC Lokomotive Leipzig. Doyle played in the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the 1990 FIFA World Cup for the U.S. National Team and earned 53 caps. He was the first team captain of the San Jose franchise of Major League Soccer and the league’s Defender of the Year in its inaugural 1996 season.

After his playing days, Doyle was an assistant coach for the San Jose Earthquakes in 2004 and 2005 and then served the Earthquakes as its general manager from 2008 to 2016.

John Doyle was inducted into the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame in 2019.
