SAN JOSE SPORTS HALL OF FAME CLASS OF 1998

Olympic Swimming Gold Medalist

Plaque Location: SAP Center, Section 109

Pablo Morales has been described as an exceptionally talented athlete driven by an incredible work ethic. His world record in the 100-meter butterfly (52.84 seconds) stood for nine years, and his 11 collegiate titles make him the “winningest swimmer in NCAA history.” At the 1984 Olympic Games, Pablo won three medals, a gold in the team medley and silvers in the 100-meter butterfly and the 200-meter individual medley. In 1992, after a three-year hiatus from swimming, Pablo made one of the greatest comeback in Olympic history, winning the 100-meter butterfly by three one-hundredths of a second — less than half a finger’s length.  He also won a second gold with the U.S. medley team. Pablo grew up in San Jose and attended Bellarmine Preparatory High School before graduating from Stanford University and Cornell Law School.
