SAN JOSÉ, CA (March 9, 2022) – The Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic, the Bay Area’s premier tennis event, will celebrate the best in women’s tennis on August 1-7, when it hosts the 2022 tournament on the campus of San José State University.
The 2022 player field is shaping up to be one of the strongest of the summer hardcourt season, as tournament organizers have already secured a commitment from the 17-year-old American superstar Coco Gauff.
Currently ranked No. 17 in the world, the rising star is a fan favorite and will be making her Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic debut in San José this August. She has already captured two Hologic WTA Tour singles titles and four doubles crowns in her young career.
“We are very excited to have Coco (Gauff) compete at the 2022 Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic,” said Tournament Director Vickie Gunnarsson. “She is an amazing talent who continues to impress every time she takes to the court. When you watch her play, you see why experts say she is a future Grand Slam champion.”
Gauff captured the hearts and minds of the world in 2019 when, as a 15-year-old, advanced to the Round of 16 at Wimbledon, which included a first-round win over the five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams. She has continued to quickly progress up the world rankings ending the 2019 season at No. 68, the 2020 season at No. 48, and the 2021 season at No. 22.
Co-founded by the legendary sportswoman, visionary, and activist Billie Jean King, the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic was the first event of the historic 1971 women’s professional tennis tour, a precursor to the WTA. Its list of past champions reads like a who’s who of women’s tennis, including Serena Williams, Lindsay Davenport, Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Andrea Jaeger, Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, Venus Williams, and Kim Clijsters.
