SAN JOSÉ, CA (August 2, 2022) – On the second day of the 2022 Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic, Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff dominated the courts, advancing to their highly anticipated second round matchup on Thursday at 7 pm.
The star power of the four-time Grand Slam Champion Osaka drew in an impressive crowd drawing 2,005 fans marking the highest Tuesday day session total since 2011 and the second-highest session attendance since the event moved to San José. Osaka overcame a fierce Zheng Qinwen performance dominating the third set, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
In the featured evening match, 2022 French Open finalist Gauff put on a near perfect performance against Anhelina Kalinina. Gauff stole the show, closing out the match 6-1, 6-0, setting up Thursday’s face-off against Osaka.
Tuesday’s opening session was highlighted by two-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist Shelby Rogers defeating 2019 US Open Champion Bianca Andreescu 6-4, 6-2. Andreescu battled recurring back pain during the match, affecting her performance as Shelby took control.
Shelby will face top-seed Maria Sakkari on Thursday afternoon.
The session opened with two Americans, Kayla Day and Caroline Dolehide thrilling the morning crowd with a marathon two-setter. Dolehide prevailed in two-hours, 7-6, 6-4.
Ninth-seeded Veronika Kudermetova was also pushed to the limit defeating Camila Giorgi in a strenuous two-and- a-half-hour match, 7-6, 4-6, 7-5. Tuesday’s final match was an impressive victory by San Jose, California native Claire Liu defeating Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, 6-2, 7-5.
Wednesday’s line-up features Paula Badosa, Daria Kasatkina, Amanda Anisimova and Karolina Pliskova, in action during the day session, and the anticipated battle of 2017 Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic Champion Madison Keys and Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur during the evening session at 7 pm.
